Books, as a medium, hold the greatest overall power to transform us; so I believe. Each of the books below has changed or added to my life in an enriching way. It is not a complete list, but hopefully a useful one.
Whether you struggle to read (therefore making the accomplishment all the more meaningful) or you read a book a day, the reward surpasses the effort immeasurably. My gratitude goes to each of these authors for their skill and their care. Thank you.
I have chosen not to use ad sales. The links all try to go to used booksellers. I do wish the authors to get paid, and I need money too, yet I feel the more information is disseminated, the better. So if a book is already waiting to be read, and no new trees must be cut for you to enjoy it, then that may be the best choice.
Lastly, I encourage you to use libraries and to give away your personal books after reading them. Write your name in it, pass it on, and ask the next person to do the same when they are finished. Hoarding knowledge and art, when not needed, is something that deserves reflection and action.

Sister Species: Women, Animals and Social Justice

Fiction about Humanity & Worker's Struggles
the Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
Mr. Steinbeck is one of my favorite authors and this is a perfect example of why. This struggle depicted has barely changed in the nearly 80 years since this book was written. Meanwhile, the humanity depicted is that of all time and beauty.

Race & Identity
Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates
No text has ever brought me into the author's identity more than this book. As a white, American male, I could only wish for writer's of every example that I'm not, to write as illuminatingly as he has. I feel indebted to Mr. Coates (though to be fair that is true to anyone on this page).

Anthropology but oh so much more
Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari
If I could be an academic it would be this guy or Carol J. Adams, or both (since I'm dreaming anyhow). This text (part of a trilogy) has been one of the hottest non-fiction books for several years and for good reason!

Veganism/Compassion/Spirituality
The World Peace Diet by Dr. Will Tuttle
Remove the spirituality and Dr. Tuttle and I are on the same wavelength. Years ago after hearing me speak, a friend said there was a man who wrote a book in the way that I speak. I read it and had to agree. The key difference is Dr. Tuttle did the type of research that I use to inform others.

Feminism and Speciesism
The Sexual Politics of Meat by Carol J. Adams
The seminal work that started the conversation. A little dry (she has many more to read that are easier) but as important now as when it was written. Carol J. Adams, from what I can gather as an onlooker, is a role model human being.
